Individual Note:
     BIOGRAPHY
Alice Jane Thompson was the daughter of Captain Robert Thompson, a
Sea Captain, and his wife Alice. They came from Newcastle -
Northumberland, England. Her mother was the daughter of Bishop Ogle of
England, who sent her to France to be educated. She spoke fluent
French. Alice often accompanied her husband at sea.
Alice Jane met and married her 1st husband, Abraham Henry Issac
Heatley in Melbourne in 1866. Abraham was accidently shot on his
brother Montgomery's farm at Woodbury in 1881. Abraham was a
farmer/contractor and later a Hotelkeeper. For five years following
Abraham's death, Alice ran the Hotel in Geraldine, until it was sold.
Alice married David Denoon in 1883 and had two children by him. Alice
had been a Music Teacher from 1896-1900 at Geraldine. She then moved
to live at Templar St, Avonside, Christchurch. This was possibly
following the death of her second husband.

moved to Wanganui in 1915, where she lived at 121 Glasgow Street.

Note for:   Daniel Montgomery Emerson Heatley,   OCT 1834 - 13 MAR 1919         Index

Baptism:
     Date:   30 OCT 1834

Individual Note:
     BIOGRAPHY
Daniel Montgomery was born in the Parish of Beag, Co. Dublin &
Wicklow. The date is not known, but he was Baptised in St Pauls Church
of Ireland, Bray, Co. Dublin & Wicklow on 30th October, 1834.
Daniel sailed to Australia on the "Indian Queen" and arrived in
Melbourne on the 8th August 1853. He was listed as being 26 years of
age. According to family records he was Baptised October 1834, making
him only 19 years.
"Monty" as he preferred to be called moved to New Zealand with his
brother Henry after previously operating "Waltrim" Pastoral Station, at
Yambuk near Port Fairy in Victoria. He had married in Melbourne and
his wife Louisa, had given birth to Charles, William & Sophia.
Everina, Helena, Louisa & Alice were all born at Woodbury, New
Zealand.
The family settled on a farm at Geraldine, near Woodbury, South
Canterbury, which they called "Thornbank". Later on the sheep got
"scab" so bad they moved off that farm and went to live at Woodbury.
He must have worked the farm with his brother Henry, and it is not
sure if his brother moved with him to Woodbury. Monty had a saddler
shop in Woodbury, and after his wife died, he had a housekeeper to
look after the family, until they all grew up and moved away. His wife
died 24 days after giving birth to Alice Ruth. Her grave is marked by
a stone in the Geraldine Cemetery in South Canterbury. The stone was
still in good condition in the year 2000. Louisa was the daughter of
Charles Williams and Ruth Stevens Williams of Tasmania.
The house in Woodbury was burnt down and everything was lost. He was
brought up to Rangiora to live with his daughter Everina at
"Thornbank". By this time he was nearly blind but managed to find his
way around the garden and to the seat along the drive where he loved
to sit. He lived at "Thornbank" until his death in 1919. His grave is
in the Church of England Cemetery, Rangiora, New Zealand. The stone is
small as the family at the time would not have had much money to spend
on a large headstone.
